Black Lake (Crno jezero) is the largest and most famous of the 18 glacial lakes in Durmitor National Park. Its stunning beauty, with the majestic Mount Međed reflecting in its crystal-clear waters, makes it a must-see destination for nature lovers and photographers. The lake is surrounded by dense forests and towering peaks, creating a breathtaking panorama that will leave you in awe. Formed by glacial activity, Black Lake is actually composed of two smaller lakes, Veliko jezero (Big Lake) and Malo jezero (Small Lake), which are connected by a narrow strait that dries up during the summer months. The lake's name comes from the dark reflection of the surrounding forests and mountains in its deep waters. The area around the lake has been inhabited for centuries, with evidence of ancient settlements and pastoral activities. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at Black Lake, including hiking, swimming (though the water is cold!), and picnicking. A well-maintained walking trail circles the entire lake, offering stunning views from all angles. You can also rent a boat and explore the lake from the water. While there are no restaurants directly on the lake shore, Žabljak town, located a short distance away, offers a range of dining options serving traditional Montenegrin dishes, including lamb cooked under the bell (ispod sača) and kačamak (a type of polenta).
Transportation
Black Lake is located approximately 3 kilometers from the town of Žabljak. You can reach the lake by car, taxi, or by walking along a well-marked trail from Žabljak. During the peak season, there may be shuttle buses operating between Žabljak and the lake.
